Nurture your Mental Health + Protect your Soul

We find ourselves in very unpredictable and extremely stressful times, it’s important that we be proactive in protecting our mental health and maintaining some kind of peace and balance during these crazy times.  I for one have been letting all of the craziness get to me and it’s most definitely taking a toll on my mental health.  Some days I’m feeling blessed to be healthy and able to breathe in the fresh, less polluted air, while other days the ugliness of it all gets into my soul and makes me feel a variety of different negative emotions  I’m also in the midst of moving my family out of state, so there’s that.  More on that story here.  

Our society is so divided right now and people have become very combative and even rude.  People are name calling, labeling and belittling people whose opinions and views differ from theirs.  When did we become this society?  It really makes me sad, especially in thinking about trying to raise 4 well balanced kids in this crazy world.  The world is ugly right now and it’s really getting to me.  Unfortunately we can’t control other people’s actions, but we can control how we respond to it and this is where my focus has shifted.  

I took out my handy dandy bullet journal and made a list of all the things that have been weighing heavy on me.  And then I came up with a plan to eliminate or reduce my exposure to these things and surround myself with things that bring me joy and peace, even if it’s temporary.  Here’s what I came up with. 

 

Balance News Exposure 

I was watching the news 24/7.  I like to be aware and up to date on what is going on in the world around us.  Our current governor currently has executive power and this scares the shit out of me.  So I watch his briefings and tweets like it’s my job.  Same goes for our President’s daily addresses.  This thing is evolving so quickly and my FOMO is at an all time high.  But it has become too much and I needed to distance myself from it.  I can still get my daily dose of news without it consuming my days. 

 

Indulge in a good book 

I’m so sad that libraries are closed.  Since I started homeschooling my son (click here for full story on that), we would have between 50-70 library books on any given week.  I love books and the library is one of my favorite places on earth.  I’ve never been a fan of E-readers.  I have one but I prefer actual books.  I love the way they look and feel.  It makes me sad to think of how we are going to view library books post covid days.  But I found my old E-reader that I haven’t used in about eight years.  When I powered it up the background picture was an image of my two older girls as babies during a Florida trip we took.  I dusted off, charged it up and downloaded a new book to indulge in.  I’m completely engrossed in it and It’s a nice, healthy distraction from the crazy world around us.     

 

Fuel Your Body with Healthy Foods

Hippocrates said let food be thy medicine and medicine be thy food and this is something I live by.  When I eat bad foods, I feel like crap.  Poor food choices lead to things like migraines, gut problems, anxiety and depression.  This is the last thing any of us need right now.  Sadly healthy food can be hard to come by right now depending on food shopping availability and quarantine budget.  But healthy food doesn’t have to be fresh (frozen is an option) nor does it have to be expensive.  For example a frozen bag of berries and a handful of mixed greens blended up in a smoothie is a great way to kickstart your day and doesn’t have to be super costly.  It does your body and your mindset wonders.      Click here for more on feeding your family healthy foods.

 

Get Moving

It’s so easy to not move, especially during the stay at home mandate.  But you would be doing your body a huge disservice if you are not getting up and moving on a daily basis.  A simple thing like walking can have huge benefits for your overall health.  It’s been proven to reduce risk of things like cancer, heart disease and type 2 diabetes.  A nice brisk walk is also proven to improve mental well being.  Getting outdoors and exposing yourself to the sun increases your vitamin d levels, increases your immune system and is good for your mental health.  Some gyms are offering online classes via social media or YouTube.  Check your local gym and see what they are offering to support their members while gyms are closed.    

 

Morning Routine     

I love a good morning routine.  I fInd that I perform best when I create healthy habits from the start.  I’m more focused, more prepared and emotionally better able to respond to negative events that happen throughout the day.  But sleep hasn’t been coming easy these days so I’ve been opting for some extra much needed zzz’s in the morning instead.  But starting your day doing something that nurtures your mind, body or soul doesn’t have to be time consuming.  

First thing I do when I wake up is oil pull.  Oil pulling is an ancient Indian remedy that was used for oral hygiene and overall health.  It’s become quite popular as an alternative remedy to reduce inflammation in the body, boost the immune system, soothe sore throats, clear out mucus and fight colds.  It’s also effective for overall oral health, preventing tooth decay and treating bleeding gums.  The practice of swishing oil in your mouth pulls out toxins from your body.  Common oils used are coconut oil, sesame oil or sunflower oil.  Swish around your mouth for 5-10 minutes, then spit out.   It’s super easy to do and a great way to detox.  

Then I chug a large glass of lemon water with a shot of Apple Cider Vinegar for an added health boost.  

Then I like to do one thing to nurture my mind and soul.  Some of these things include…  

Prayer, gratitude, affirmations, stretching, meditation, deep breathing, journaling, going on a walk, listening to favorite music or sitting in silence.  

You can spend 3 minutes or 1 hour.  The important thing is to do something that will bring peace and joy to your day.  

Two things that I recommend you DO NOT do first thing in the morning is watch the news or go on social media.  You can’t control what you’re going to see and how it’s going to make you feel.  You set the tone for how you start your day.  

    

Spa Bath

I am a big fan of a hot, steamy, relaxing bath.  I love bath salts, scrubs, body washes and anything bath related.  It’s a great way to destress, reflect and manifest.  I like to take a bath shortly before going to sleep but to me any time is a good time for bath time.  Add a cup of Epsom salt and your favorite essential oils for some much needed relaxation.  I currently have a standard size bathtub that I can barely fit in but it’s still relaxing to me.  We are in the process of moving out of state (click here for that story) and the houses that we narrowed down to have master bathroom suites with gorgeous soaking tubs.  This is something I am very much looking forward to and is much needed.     

 

We are in stressful times but that doesn’t mean we need to live in fear and let the stress of what is going on around us consume us.  We MUST be proactive in protecting our mental health.
