I am not a doctor or medical expert.  The content I share in this post is from my own research and what has worked for me and my family.  Use discretion in using natural remedies and seek medical help in severe situations.  Click here for full disclosure.

When you have kids, it’s common practice for them to fall, scrape their knees and get banged up every now and again.  Being a natural mama I opt for natural first aid options when treating my families bumps and ailments.

Growing up, I was fortunate enough to have four amazing grandparents in my life.  I used to love listening to stories about how different times were when they were growing up.  They didn’t have access to a Mrs. Green’s or CVS. They had no choice but to use food as medicine and many of these old time remedies still hold true today.

As I stated above, I am not a doctor or medical expert.  I am a mom of four who has experienced my fair share of bumps and bruises throughout my journey.  I have built a “tool kit” of natural remedies that I am confident in using in treating my kids ailments.

In this blog post I share 7 of my favorite, “go-to” remedies to treat cuts, scrapes, bruises and burns.

7 All Natural First Aid Hacks

Honey

In addition to it’s sweet, yummy taste, honey has tons of healing benefits.  It has anti-viral, anti-bacterial and anti-fungal properties and has been used in medicine for thousands of years.  A high quality Manuka Honey has the most healing properties.

  • Honey can treat burns and wounds.  After cleaning the wound, apply a thick layer of honey over the entire area of the wound and cover with a breathable bandage.

Onion

first aid hacks

In addition to being a Superfood, onions are multi-functional and serve as first aid remedies as well.  You will always find onions in my kitchen . I use them in a lot of my cooking including Bone Broth and as natural remedies for treating common childhood symptoms.  Onions have antibacterial, anti-inflammatory and antihistamine properties.

Here are some ways you can use onions as a first aid hack

  • Apply cut up onion to a cut.  The onion cleanses the wound and prevents infection.
  • Onions can soothe burns.  Chop up an onion and place it directly over the wound holding it in place for a few minutes.  You will feel immediate relief.
  • Soothes bee and insect stings.  If you are stung by a bee or wasp, you want to apply crushed or grated onions to the site of the sting.  The antihistamine properties will prevent a reaction while the anti-inflamatory properties will reduce swelling.  You can keep the onion in place by covering with a breathable bandage.

Banana Peel

first aid hacks

In addition to being sweet and delicious, bananas are a great first aid remedy as well.

  • Relieves rashes and itches from bug bites, mosquito bites and even poison ivy.  Rub the inside of a banana peel on your skin and let it sit for 10-15 minutes then wipe off.
  • Heal bruises
  • Remove splinters – rub the inside of the peel over a splinter and let it sit for 15-25 minutes or until the skin around the splinter softens.  This will allow the splinter to come right out
  • Relieves pain from burns and scrapes
  • relieves headaches – rub the inside of peel on forehead and temple to relieve headache

Witch Hazel

first aid hacks

I remember as a kid Witch Hazel always stocked the shelves of our medicine cabinet.  Now Witch Hazel stocks the shelves of my medicine cabinet. This is the one that I use.  Witch Hazel has lots of medicinal properties.  It’s anti-inflammatory, antiseptic, antiviral, antibacterial, sedative and astringent just to name a few.

Witch hazel can be used to:

  • Moisturize dry itchy skin including poison ivy , poison oak and Eczema
  • Reduce swelling from bruises
  • Clean and heal cuts
  • Relieves itching, burning and swelling from insect bites
  • Prevents swimmer’s ear

Lavender Essential Oil

first aid hacks

Lavender is my essential oil of choice when it comes to first aid.  It has antihistamine and antimicrobial properties.

  • Apply to cuts and wounds to disinfect, helps heal faster and decreases the appearance of scarring.
  • Lavender can also be used for bug bites, bee stings, and burns, including sunburns.

How to make Lavender Essential Oil spray

In a 2 ounce glass spray bottle

add 1 tablespoon of carrier oil of your choice.  I like Fractionated Coconut Oil or Almond Oil

Add 20 drops of Lavender essential oil.

Shake and spray.

Not all essential oils are created equally.  You want to make sure you get a high quality essential oil.  I use and love Revive’s essential oils because they use 100% pure, unrefined oils that are bottled in the USA.  They also offer free shipping and free returns.

Calendula oil is a natural oil extracted from marigold flowers.  It has anti-fungal, anti-inflammatory, and antibacterial and antiseptic properties that help to heal wounds, soothe eczema, and relieve diaper rash.

  • Using a gauze pad or cotton, apply calendula oil  to a scrapes, cuts, burns or other skin irritations.
  • Stops bleeding quickly and speeds up the healing process
  • Reduces pain and swelling

Bentonite Clay

first aid hacks

Bentonite Clay also referred to as “healing clay”, heals by pulling out toxins, heavy metals, impurities and chemicals .  It has a high concentration of minerals including silica, magnesium, iron, sodium and potassium.

You can use bentonite clay to naturally treat a variety of ailments.

  • Make a paste by mixing it with water and apply to cuts, insect bites, skin rashes or burns.  Leave it on until it dries, then wash off.  For more severe cuts, wounds, etc., put a thick layer of the paste over the infected area and cover with a breathable bandage.

This is the one I use.

Bentonite clay has many other uses that mom’s would appreciate.  Some ways I use bentonite clay are:

  • Detox bath
  • Face mask
  • Hair mask
  • Skin irritations
  • Whiten and remineralize teeth
