Podcast Episode 11 ~ Why I choose to bring my family to a holistic dentist

Podcast Episode 11 ~ Why I choose to bring my family to a holistic dentist

Episode 11 ~ Why I choose to bring my family to a holistic dentist

Show Notes

Oral health should be taken very seriously.  It is the window to our overall health. Teaching our kids preventative measures, like proper brushing and flossing is key.  So is finding a dentist that you trust and that aligns with your values and beliefs.

1. I don’t believe in fluoride

Fluoride is a neurotoxin.  It’s known to impact the cardiovascular, central nervous, digestive, endocrine, immune, integumentary, renal, respiratory, and skeletal systems, and exposure to fluoride has been linked to Alzheimer’s disease, cancer, diabetes, heart disease, infertility, and many other adverse health outcomes, including fluoride toxicity.

2.  I don’t believe in Mercury fillings

Silver fillings are banned in many other countries but not here in the US.

it is absorbed into the body and retained particularly in the brain, kidney, liver, lung, and gastrointestinal tract.

Dental Mercury could cause:

Allergies

Cardiovascular problems

Alzheimer’s disease

Autism spectrum disorders

Chronic fatigue syndrome

Kidney disease

Depression and anxiety

Reproductive dysfunction

Autoimmune disorders

And mercury poisoning

3.  I don’t believe in Root canals

They are intrusive and can lead to bigger problems.

During a root canal, dangerous bacteria can hide out in the tooth.  It can become super toxic and can migrate to other tissues in your body, and your heart, kidneys, bones and brain.

4.  I don’t believe in laughing gas

I don’t want to give my child nitrous oxide to my child to get a cavity filled.

I made a conscious decision to find a holistic dentist that has the same beliefs as me.

A holistic dentist or biological dentist looks at the patient’s overall health and uses natural therapies to prevent, diagnose and treat.

Reduced root canals, crowns and invasive techniques.

Practices minimally invasive dentistry with the Biomimetic philosophy

Homemade Toothpaste

Calcium bentonite clay

Pure essential oils

Water (i use and love this filtered water system)

Flavored stevia

Educate yourself as much as possible and make informed decisions.  If you don’t feel comfortable with a recommendation made by your dentist or any doctor, you have every right to say no.  You can always do something later on after you’ve researched it and made a conscious, educated decision if you choose to, but you can’t undo something.

Leave me a comment and let me know if you are a non conformist.

Podcast Episode 10 – Intentional Living ~ 10 steps to live more on purpose

Podcast Episode 10 – Intentional Living ~ 10 steps to live more on purpose

intentional living

Episode 10 ~ Intentional living ~ 10 steps to live more on purpose:  Show Notes

Do you ever feel like you are surviving instead of living?

With each passing day instead of doing what you really want to do, you always find yourself doing what you have to do in order to just get through the day.

We think and hope that this cycle will stop and magically get better, but without effort on our part, it won’t.

This may very well be the rest of our lives, unless we decide to change things. Our every day small actions can work for us, or against us. It’s up to us to choose which.

What is intentional living?

According to Wikepedia, “Intentional living is any lifestyle based on an individual or group’s conscious attempts to live according to their values and beliefs. These can include lifestyles based on Religious, Political or Ethical values, as well as Coaching, Personal Transformation, and Leadership Training”.

10 steps you can take to live intentionally

  1.  Daily Gratitude

When you purposely start focusing on the positive things in your life you shift your mindset to start noticing more positives and less negatives.

Write in a gratitude journal – Every morning when wake up or every night before bed write down 3-5 things you’re grateful for.

Verbally say what you’re grateful for.  Do a gratitude countdown where you start at 10 and counting back to 1 saying things you are grateful for.

2. Set your intentions for the day

Instead of allowing the day to happen to you, you decide how your day will play out.  Every morning when you wake up set your intention for the day and say it out loud.

When you set an intention, you manifest what you want to attract and you’re putting it out into the universe.

3.  Declutter

Positive energy flows better in a clutter free environment.  Your home should be a reflection of you and should align with what fills your heart with joy.

Benefits of having an organized home

Boosts energy

Reduces stress

Leads to better eating habits

Improves sleep habits

Eliminates mind clutter

Did you ever ask yourself what purpose all your stuff serve you, other than having to be cleaned or organized?

I love marie kondo’s Konmari method that we should surround ourselves with only the things that spark joy in our lives.

4.  Set goals

Let’s face it when you have kids, our wants and even our needs get pushed aside, reaching goals is almost near impossible.  We make one sacrifice after another and before we know days, months and years have gone by and we still didn’t’ accomplish what we set out to do.

Set goals for yourself.   Dream big and set big goals that seem unattainable.  And set small goals that seem ordinary.

Goals should be specific and quantifiable.

SMART Goals are

Specific

Measurable

Attainable

Relevant

Time bound

5.  Yoga

Yoga has been proven to decrease stress, improve energy, reduce anxiety, promote better sleep and increase muscle strength and tone.  Since I started doing yoga I have become more in touch with my emotions, I feel more grounded, more present and better able to handle everyday stressors.

Join a gym that offers yoga, take a local yoga class, or live stream yoga classes on line and do it on your own terms.

Benefits of doing yoga

Physical and mental awareness

Tones and strengthens your muscles

Declutter your mind

Teaches you how to live in the present

Helps you sleep better at night

6.  Meditation

As mom’s we are always on the go and our minds are always running on overdrive.  Meditation is a practice that helps calm and quiet the mind. Meditation reduces stress and anxiety and helps you better manage your emotions.  It helps you connect with your inner self, be completely focused in the moment and not think about what’s next.

The practice of being mindful, completely present and deep breathing are all practices that will help you be a more present, happy and calm mother.

There are a lot of good apps you can download to your smart phone. Many of these have a free version or a free trial that you can take advantage of.  I use and love the app Calm. I have a paid subscription so I can enjoy its full benefits but there is a free version.

You can add meditation to your morning routine. It’s a great way to start your day on a positive note.

Or you can add meditation to your night routine before going to sleep when you are less pressed for time.

You can meditate in the middle of the day on your lunch break, or when your baby is napping.

It doesn’t matter when you meditate, as long as you do it.

7.  Daily Movement

Majority of people are not meeting the guidelines of physical activity.

Sit for long periods of time to and from work

Sit at a desk for extended periods of time

Sit watching tv, Netflix, or on smart phone

 On line grocery  delivery service

Make it a point every day to get movin’

Sit less and Walk more

reduces alzheimers disease

reduced risk of cancer

reduced chance of getting type 2 diabetes and heart disease and

improved mental well being.

Get out and get walking.

 Set a step goal

Pedometer – track your steps, you get group support and motivation to keep going.

Smart phone track daily step count

Look for opportunities in everyday life to walk more.  Simple Small steps can quickly make a big impact

Walk to and from school

Park further away and walk

Go food shopping, don’t order

Take stairs instead of elevator

Get off the train or bus one stop earlier and walk

Get up off your desk and go for a walk – mid morning 15 minute walk – recharge

Set alarm to get up off the chair every hour – desk job

Stop and Move  – do small bite size movements of some form of physical activity.

Do push ups

Jumping Jacks

Squats

Jump Rope

Resistance bands

Lunges

Or a kitchen dance party

Opt for 1-5 minutes 3-4 times a day

Join a gym –

Exercising has many health benefits not only for your body but for your mind and your soul.   It can improve your health and decrease your chances of developing diseases. Regular physical activity can improve your quality of life.

  • Help you achieve weight loss goals
  • Makes you feel happier
  • Increases energy
  • Strengthens muscles
  • Can promote better sleep
  • Relieves stress

Set a workout goal for what works for you

8.  Healthy Eating

Our bodies function based on the fuel we are feeding it.  When we fuel our bodies with processed, sugary foods that have empty calories, we are going to be running on empty, with little energy and struggling to get through the day.  We aren’t going to last too long before our bodies give up on us.

Food we eat has a significant impact on our health.

Type 2 diabetes and obesity are clearly a result of diet.

But our diet effects other conditions as well like

migraine, gut problems and mental health – depression and anxiety.

  • Almost 30 million people in the United States have diabetes
  • 32 million Americans have food allergies, including 5.6 million children under age 18. That’s one in 13 children, or roughly two in every classroom.
  • 133 million Americans – 40% have a chronic disease.  projected to grow to an 157 million, with 81 million having multiple conditions
  • Childhood obesity is the most common chronic disease of childhood affecting more than 30% of children.

We are headed down a very dangerous path.

The good thing is each one of us has the power to not be just another statistic.  We can intentionally fuel our bodies with proper foods.

Avoid processed foods –

Limit anything in boxes, bags or cans

Read ingredient labels – The more ingredients a food has the more processed it

Eat whole foods

Food shopping tips

When food shopping shop on the outside perimeter of the supermarket, that’s where you will find fresh whole foods and minimally processed foods.

When shopping for organic produce check the sku number.  If it starts with a 9 means the item is organic.

If it begins with a 3 or a 4 means the produce is probably conventionally grown.

9.  Relaxation

We need to intentionally create relaxation time for our own mental health.  Here are some small relaxation practices you can do

  • Sit in silence for 15 minutes and just be with your thoughts.
  • Go on a mindful walk.  Using all of your senses, observe your surrounding and be completely present throughout your walk, making a deeper connection to nature.
  • Read a book for pleasure.  Make your favorite coffee or tea in your favorite mug and sit in a cozy spot and read for 15 minutes.
  • Music therapy.  Music has a positive effect on your overall health. Put on you favorite playlist and lay for 15 minutes while letting the music invigorate your soul.
  • Take a hot bath.  Sit, soak and relax for 15-25 minutes.  Add epsom salt and lavender essential oil to make it a spa bath.

10.  Unplug from Technology

As great as social media is in building personal connections and keeping up with your loved ones fast paced lives, it has a lot of negatives that are affecting our mental health:

  • It can cause stress, anxiety and even depression
  • Sets unrealistic expectations
  • Creates unhealthy sleep patterns
  • It creates FOMO – Fear of missing out
  • It can create a negative body image by constantly comparing ourselves to others
  • It can cause disagreements, arguments and even end relationships

The more connected we are to social media the less connected we are to the real world

  • Give yourself a specified time period when you can use technology.
  • Do not go on your tech device first thing in the morning or right before going to sleep.  Do NOT go on it if you wake up in the middle of the night and can’t fall back asleep.
  • Turn off notifications.  Go into the settings menu on your smart phone and turn off as many notifications as possible – social media, email, push alerts, etc…
  • Don’t sleep with your phone next to you or if you do turn it to airplane mode.

Recap

  1. Daily gratitude
  2. Set your intentions
  3. Declutter
  4. Set goals
  5. Yoga
  6. Meditation
  7. Daily movement
  8. Healthy eating

Podcast Episode 9 – Morning Routines ~ 7 Habits to become a Happy, Healthy and Balanced Mom

Podcast episode 9 – Morning Routines ~ 7 Habits to become a Happy, Healthy and Balanced Moms

Show notes

morning routines

I’ve created a consistent morning routine that when i follow it, my days are more productive, my head feels more clear and i’m more focused.

Benefits of establishing a morning routine

  1. Start the day off right.  Your setting the tone of your day on a positive note by creating good habits.  Your approach toward the day will be positive and you’ll be more prepared for the days events and challenges.
  1.  More productive  – when you start the day off in a positive way, your giving yourself a head start on the day.  Your creating momentum that you can take with you throughout your day. When you wake up and are rushed, your playing catch up and you let the day dictate your day.
  1.  Spend valuable time with yourself.  A time to dedicate to doing whatever you want without any interruptions or distractions.  It may be the only time you get to yourself all day.

I spend quite a bit of time observing the habits of different people.  And the one thing almost every successful business person has in common is they wake up early.

90% of executives wake up before 6am on weekdays,

50% of self-made millionaires wake up at least three hours before their workday actually begins.

Warren Buffett wakes up at 6:45am and starts his day by reading the newspaper.

Apple CEO Tim Cook wakes up at 3:45am every morning to go through email and exercise.

Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson is already in the gym by 4am.

Jack Dorsey, co-founder and CEO of Twitter and Square, wakes up at 5am to meditate and exercise.

LinkedIn CEO Jeff Weiner wakes at 5:30am to checks email, reads the news, exercises, meditate and eat breakfast

Oprah Winfrey usually wakes up on her own between 6 – 6:30  and starts her day by walking her dogs, exercise, meditation, and breakfast.

How to create a morning routine

  1. Plan what time you want to wake up.  Commit to it.
  2. Wake up a little earlier each day.  Start with waking up 15 minutes earlier and every 2 – 3 days, add on an additional 10 minutes until you reach your target wake up time.
  3. Wake up the same time every day.  The more consistent you are the more natural it will become.

7 morning routines habits for happy, healthy and balanced Moms

1. Feed your soul – mediate, practice gratitude, self reflection, sit in silence, prayer

Meditate

Meditation helps you connect with your inner self, be completely focused in the moment and not think about what’s coming next.  It helps you be mindful and completely present which will help you be a more present, happy and calm mother.  A great way to start your day. It reduces stress and anxiety and helps you better manage your emotions. I started my meditation journey about  one year ago. I am now more present when i’m around my kids, my energy is more positive, I’m calmer and i’m overall just happier. I’m able to let go of all the mind clutter that so often dominated my thoughts leaving me feeling stressed out and overwhelmed.

Practice Gratitude

Say 10 things you are grateful for starting with 10 and working your way back to 1.  Start with broad categories then get more specific. Or keep a gratitude journal and write 3-5 things you are grateful for.

When you intentionally start focusing on the positive things in your life you shift your mindset to start noticing more positives and less negatives. I have always been a pretty positive person. So I never felt that practicing gratitude was something I necessarily needed in my life.

Reflection

Moms feel guilt.  It doesn’t matter if your a stay at home, Pinterest mom who attends every school event and PTA meeting or your working mom who finds out about the parent teacher conference 5 minutes prior.  We all have some form of guilt. Sometimes its a occasional pang that we can work through quickly other times it’s constant. Constant guilt nagging us all the time.

When taking time to self-reflect you are looking inwards. This helps us build self-awareness.  It allows us to understand our emotions, strengths, weaknesses, drives, values and goals, and how it impacts others.

Think of an inner conflict, something you are dissatisfied with and want to improve on.  Hyper analyze the topic, dig deep and be 100% completely honest with yourself. The process can lead to valuable insights and even breakthroughs.

Sit in silence

Sitting in silence allows you to find peace of mind.  In a very noisy world, intentional silence allows you to feel peaceful, calm and centered.

Start your day with prayer

This strengthens your belief and spiritual connection and is a positive way to start your day.

5-10 minutes to feed your soul works wonders.

2.  Set your intention for the day

Instead of allowing the day to happen to you, you decide how your day will play out.  when you set an intention, you manifest what you want to attract and you’re putting it out into the universe.

This habit can take all of 60 seconds.

3.  Stretch

After a long night of sleep, wake your body and muscles up with a good stretch.  Morning stretching helps kick-start your energy levels, circulates blood flow throughout your body including your brain. Adequate blood flow increases concentration and sharpens senses.

5-10 minutes of stretching

4.  Feed your mind

Devote time in the morning to reading, listening to a favorite podcast, reviewing empowering quotes.  Feeding your mind can help keep you focused on your larger goals. Every monday morning i like to start my week reading motivational and inspirational quotes.  This helps set the tone for my week.

I post my weekly motivational mantra on Facebook and instagram.  Link in show notes.

www.facebook.com/simplypuremamaonsocial

www.instagram.com/simply_pure_mama

Time is based on personal preference and schedule.  I spend 15 minutes feeding my mind

5.  Oil pull

Oil pulling pulls out toxins from your body, reduces inflammation and boosts your immune system.  Some of its benefits are It aides in oral health as well as soothes sore throats, clears out excess mucus and fights colds.

I oil pull every morning for 10 minutes while i’m making my morning coffee and preparing the kids breakfast and lunches for the day.. Take a tablespoon of coconut oil and swish it around your mouth and between your teeth for 5-10 minutes then spit it out into a garbage.  It’s super easy to do and one of the best detox methods you can incorporate into your morning routine.

6.  Drink lemon water with a splash of ACV

Besides getting an energy boost, increased concentration and higher functioning, this trifeta cocktail is Good for gut health, Lowers blood sugar and helps you lose weight.  What better way to start your day.

7.  Exercise

Morning exercise has proven to reduces stress by lowering blood pressure and it also helps you burn more fat throughout the day.

RECAP

  1.  Feed your soul
  2. Set your intention for the day
  3. Stretch
  4. Feed your mind
  5. Oil pull
  6. Drink Lemon water with ACV
  7. Exercise

“There’s a great big beautiful tomorrow, shining at the end of every day.”

It’ a new day.  This is your opportunity for a fresh start to get things right, crush your goals and maybe do things differently than you did yesterday.  Don’t take it for granted.

Podcast Episode 8 ~ Is social media controlling your life? How to Facebook on Purpose

Podcast Episode 8 ~ Is social media controlling your life? How to Facebook on Purpose

Podcast Episode 8 – Is Social Media Controlling your life?  How to Facebook on Purpose

Facebook on purpose

I made a conscious decision to live my best mom life.  I intentionally create a life that is filled with peace, calm and tranquility.  I avoid things that don’t lend itself to my intention.

One steps i’m taking is to use social media on purpose by setting social media limits

What does that mean? I made a conscious decision to not spend wasteful time on social media. Have you ever checked the screen time function on your smart phone? I did and I could’t believe how much time I was spending on social media. When you add a couple minutes here and there it adds up to be a lot.

As a blogger, social media is a big part of my purpose. I promote published blog posts, I engage with my followers, and I build relationships with other moms and other bloggers.

On a personal level, I love connecting with my friends and family. I enjoy seeing their family pictures and watching their kids grow. It’s a nice way to keep up with people’s lives.

I also love talking about things like the latest housewives shenanigans.

On the other hand, there are a lot of negatives to social media.

  • It can cause us stress, anxiety and even depression
  • It can set unrealistic expectations
  • There’s cyberbullying
  • It can cause unhealthy sleep patterns
  • FOMO anyone?
  • It can create a negative body image by constantly comparing ourselves to others
  • It can cause disagreements which lead to arguments and even an end to a friendship

As with anything else in life, it’s all about balance.

Here are some steps I have been taking and how you too can Facebook on Purpose:

1.  Don’t scroll social throughout the day.

2.  Customize your newsfeed that aligns with your purpose.

3.  DO NOT go on Facebook first thing in the morning or right before going to sleep.

4. Turn off notifications.
